Behind the Production of Van Gogh
Written and directed by Bryan Muscat and produced by Louise and Bryan Muscat, Van Gogh began after Louise read Irving Stone’s Lust for Life and encouraged Bryan to read it too. From the first pages, he was struck by Vincent van Gogh’s intense passion, leading him to explore the artist’s letters, books, and paintings. Three years later, Lemonhead began developing the production.
The play is set during Van Gogh’s final months in Auvers in 1890, where conversations with Dr Gachet trigger memories from different periods of his life. Through flashbacks, the production revisits key moments that shaped Van Gogh’s artistic expression, including Arles and the Yellow House, his time in London and Paris, his relationships with Eugenie, Margot, Sien, and Kee, and his early experiences in the Borinage.
Although Van Gogh’s many letters to his brother Theo are not heavily featured directly, they deeply informed the episodes presented on stage. The production blends historical detail with imagination, including the character of Aurelie, Dr Gachet’s daughter, whose connection with Vincent helps open up further memories.
Bryan Muscat also reflects on the casting and rehearsal process, praising the commitment of the cast and production team. He thanks everyone involved, as well as the audience, and hopes they enjoy watching the production as much as the team enjoyed creating it.
The play was staged at MITP Theatre in Valletta, in March 2004.
