A theatre company built from the work itself.

Lemonhead Productions is a Maltese theatre and television production company founded by Louise and Bryan Muscat in July 1999. Built on Bryan’s training and experience as an actor, director, writer and producer, the company began as a drama school and grew into a production house with work spanning theatre, television drama and children’s programming.

Louise and Bryan Muscat co-founded Lemonhead Productions in July 1999. Bryan studied drama at St. Mary’s College in London from 1985 to 1989. After returning to Malta, he became active in both the local theatre and television scenes, taking on significant roles in a range of productions.

In 1997, Bryan was asked to direct his first theatrical production: Teatru Rjal’s Ġesu’ Ta’ Nazaret II, an original musical depicting the life of Jesus Christ from the miracle at Cana through to his crucifixion and resurrection. Over the next two years, working as a director, actor and scriptwriter with Pawlu Testa’s Teatru Rjal company, Bryan was involved in ten further productions, including Is-Salib tal-Fidda, Raġa’ Sebaħ, Is-Sette Giugno and Diana – Queen of Hearts. Louise Muscat served as executive producer on Diana – Queen of Hearts. This collaboration led Louise and Bryan to establish their own troupe, and Lemonhead Productions was born.

Workshops began in October 1999, and Lemonhead enrolled more than 40 students across three classes in its first year. A year later, Lemonhead Productions staged its first theatrical production, George Orwell’s Animal Farm, at the MITP in December 2000. Twelve productions followed, culminating in Imxi Warajja in 2013, the company’s final theatrical production before Louise and Bryan shifted their focus to television. By 2010, Lemonhead had more than 120 drama students who had completed its four-year course. Louise’s full-time job became increasingly demanding, while Bryan continued working as a freelance writer, director, producer and actor in the local television scene. He produced children’s programmes including Mini Bugz and Chiyo, as well as several other television programmes. His first television drama as producer and director was Amen, which aired in 2014.

Bryan continued working on several television dramas, including Nru. 9, Mirjana Coliero, It-Tfal, Andrew & Sue, St. Mary’s, Fattigi and Iċ-Ċaqqufa. Three years ago, he decided to leave television and return fully to theatre. He co-produced his theatrical comeback, Faust, with Mixta.mt at the Black Theatre in Blata l-Bajda. He also resumed teaching drama through Mixta.mt, offering courses in directing and acting through a collaboration between Lemonhead Productions and Mixta.mt.

Bryan is now working on a new theatrical production, Eħlisna mid-Deni, to be staged at the Black Theatre in Blata l-Bajda under Lemonhead Productions.
